I’m Renovating Too

Running beside Coop across a field.

I’m Jason — a dad, coach and 57-year-old who has no intention of quietly becoming less capable with age.

Renovating Dad started from a simple question:

How capable can I become?

A big part of this is personal. I have a young son, and I don’t want to be the dad who has to watch from the sidelines because age has gradually taken away what I can do. I want to be able to hike with him, travel with him, take on adventures, kick a ball around, carry the bags and keep up rather than ask everyone else to slow down. For me, staying strong and fit isn’t about chasing youth — it’s about making sure I’m still an active, capable dad for as many years as possible.

Not how young can I look. Not how much weight can I lift for Instagram. Not how extreme can I make my diet.

I mean genuinely capable.

Strong enough to carry things. Fit enough to climb mountains. Mobile enough to get off the floor easily. Healthy enough to keep doing the things I enjoy. And resilient enough to keep saying yes to challenges as I get older.

I’ve trained for most of my adult life, but I’m still learning, testing and rebuilding.

Over the years I’ve run marathons and ultramarathons, completed the Fan Dance, climbed mountains and taken on endurance events. Today, my training still includes strength, running, cycling, mobility and whatever challenge is coming next.

I’m currently working towards further strength certification, endurance events and new physical challenges — not because I think everyone needs to do the same, but because I believe the best way to understand what works is to keep testing it in the real world.

I’m a qualified Level 4 Personal Trainer and I continue to study nutrition, health and performance, particularly how training needs to change as we move through our 50s, 60s and beyond.

But Renovating Dad isn’t about turning every man into an athlete.

It’s about maintaining the things that matter.

Strength. Movement. Cardiovascular fitness. Energy. Independence. Confidence.

Because ageing is inevitable.

Becoming incapable isn’t.

My aim with Renovating Dad is to take what I learn, strip away the fitness-industry noise and turn it into practical advice and training that ordinary men can actually use.

No extreme diets.

No pretending we’re 25.

No obsession with looking like a bodybuilder.

Just sensible, progressive work designed to help you build — and maintain — a body that is capable of more.
